Two Truths and a Lie: Why Work?

Book: Genesis, Matthew

Retirement is often viewed as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Why? Because work can be downright frustrating. But God designed us to work. He instituted work. Grasping his vision for work is important to finding meaning in your work.

Brian Dainsberg, Lead Pastor, looks at Genesis 1:26-27; 2:2-3; 2:15; Matthew 22:34-39 and four ways God wants you to see your work:

1) We were made to work
2) We were made to do skilled work
3) Work is a way to love your neighbor
4) Work is a way to worship God

Discussion/Reflection Questions:
1) In Genesis 1-2, creation is described as God’s work. In creation God brought order out of chaos (See Gen. 1:1-2). How does the work you do bring order out of chaos?
2) The second greatest command is to love your neighbor. Have you ever considered work as a means to live out that command? In what ways does the work you do express love for your neighbor?
3) “Whether it was the backbreaking labor of making bricks, or building the tabernacle, or overseeing worship, in God’s eyes there was great continuity in all that work. God doesn’t see your job as just a job, he sees it as a vocation he’s called you to; a venue for you to worship him.” Does this help dignify the work you do? Why or why not?
